Sleep inertia: why your brain feels slow after waking

What is sleep inertia?

Sleep inertia is the transitional state between sleep and wake. During it, alertness, reaction time, and decision-making are temporarily reduced. It typically lasts 15–30 minutes but can extend to an hour depending on sleep quality, timing, and the sleep stage you woke from.
